- The legend about the Seven Rila Lakes tells a story about a dragon that lived in the lake and protected the people of the surrounding areas. One day a young man came and asked for the hand of the local ruler's daughter, but the ruler made it a condition that the young man first kill the dragon. The young man found a way to defeat the beast by stealing its eggs and replacing them with stones. When the dragon realized the deception, he released all the people he had imprisoned and left the lake forever. Since then, the lake has become accessible to everyone.
- The seven Rila lakes are a sacred place for the followers of the teachings of Petar Dunov, also known as Beinsa Duno. Every year on August 19, they gather at Kidney Lake to perform their spiritual practices and meditation.
