Location and accessibility

The seven Rila lakes are located in Rila National Park, a high mountain region in Southwestern Bulgaria. The group is located in the high part of the mountain, as the highest lake - Salzata, reaches an altitude of 2535 meters. Accessing the lakes can be challenging due to the steep trails and high altitude, but the effort is well worth it. There are two main routes to reach the lakes: the first starts from Pionerska hut, while the second starts from Rila Lakes hut. Both the route they take several hours of walking, but provide unforgettable views and opportunities to relax in nature.

Geological origin

The seven Rila lakes were formed by glacial activity during the last ice age. As the glaciers melt, they leave behind deep depressions filled with water, creating these beautiful lakes. Each lake has a unique shape and size, ranging from 7 acres (the smallest) to 91 acres (the largest). The lakes also vary in depth, with the deepest reaching a depth of 37.7 meters.

  • The legend about the Seven Rila Lakes tells a story about a dragon that lived in the lake and protected the people of the surrounding areas. One day a young man came and asked for the hand of the local ruler's daughter, but the ruler made it a condition that the young man first kill the dragon. The young man found a way to defeat the beast by stealing its eggs and replacing them with stones. When the dragon realized the deception, he released all the people he had imprisoned and left the lake forever. Since then, the lake has become accessible to everyone.
  • The seven Rila lakes are a sacred place for the followers of the teachings of Petar Dunov, also known as Beinsa Duno. Every year on August 19, they gather at Kidney Lake to perform their spiritual practices and meditation.
