On the banks of the Arda River, in the town of Kardjali, there is a unique monastery complex - "St. John the Forerunner”. It is one of the most famous monastery complexes in Bulgaria, known for its rich history and religious significance. Built in the 6th century, as a continuation of a famous necropolis, it was then abandoned. The remains of the complex were discovered in 1962 during excavations, and years after the first discoveries, an increasingly large part of the structure was revealed.  Today there you will find the restored church "St. John the Forerunner”.
