In our column "Feel Bulgaria with…" today we meet you with Victor Georgiev / @vviiktor / - a young and extremely positive traveler who creates great visual and verbal content and has long been on our list of favorite authors on Instagram. Here is what Victor told us about himself…

Hello! My name is Victor Georgiev. I am a coach at Tabata & Hiit, but another of my great passions is photography and travel. I travel every day off, I like to visit new and unknown places. I do it because the time spent in nature, capturing different views and moments definitely charges and inspires me. With my Instagram account I want to make more people visit our beautiful places in Bulgaria and beyond. I have been to many places abroad, but our nature here is unique and should definitely not be underestimated. Recently I also create short videos from every location I visit. I do it in order for people to get an accurate and clear idea of what it looks like and to learn a little more information about it.

And now, thanks to Victor, we will move to several great places in different parts of Bulgaria - see them and get inspired to travel around our beautiful homeland!

№ 1

Elena Basilica

The temple is located about 3.5 km. northeast of the town of Pirdop. The area and the river that flows through it are called "Elensko" and "Elena river", and the ruins of the basilica "Elena Monastery" or Monastery "St. Elijah".

The place is ancient Thracian sanctuary of the tribe Velikokoylaleti. Prof. Alexander Fol locates in this region the Thracian legend about the descent of a deer from the Balkan Mountains and its sacrifice by the local population on a certain day of the year. This is one of the assumptions about the origin of the toponym. The legend is not without grounds, as during the excavations of the terrain and the temple a large amount of scattered deer bones and horns were found. Another thesis about the origin of the toponym is from the Bulgarianization of the ethnonym "Hellenes" (Greeks) in later times, according to the belonging of the basilica in the early Byzantine era.

According to historical and archaeological data, the most ancient monument of national importance in the Municipality of Pirdop are the ruins of the early Christian fortified church in the area "Elensko", dating from the end of V - first half of VI century. culture.

Mother Bulgaria Pantheon

The Mother Bulgaria Pantheon in the village of Gurguliat is a huge monument, having the shape of a truncated quadrangular pyramid with impressive dimensions: height about 20 m. And width on each side about 25-30 m. (Including stairs on all sides), with an area of about 700 sq.m. The Pantheon is built as an open to the sky and the surrounding area temple in the shape of an inspired pyramid and a fortified bunker with embrasures, compositionally represents a solemn alley 120 meters long in the open field. In its center is a statue of a Bulgarian woman with an apron, symbolizing Mother Bulgaria, mourning her slain defenders.

Under the monument on the mass mound lie the bones of Bulgarian and Serbian soldiers. The Mother Bulgaria Pantheon was erected in 1985 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the war in memory of the soldiers and officers killed in the Battle of Gurguliat during the Serbo-Bulgarian War.

Back rocks

To get to the view, you must first reach the village of Ravnogor and more precisely the last house above the village (there are also signs on the road). From there you take a dirt road that will take you to the chapel "St. The Prophet Elijah. The chapel is large, from the outside it looks like a church with a bell tower and a large yard. The time there is about 15 minutes walk, you can get there by car, but the road is broken in places. You will see a sign that shows the road to Bekovi skali on the left, after about 35-40 minutes from the chapel is the Bekovi skali site, where the beautiful view is located! (As a guide to the view, you can use the yellow trash can, from there go down to the right on the path).

White River Eco Trail

Before you go, you need to know:

  • the road is broken in places
  • the trail is not suitable for small children and dogs
  • there are steep sections
  • slippery places
  • Be comfortable shoes!

Eco-trail Byala Reka is located on the territory of the Central Balkan National Park. It is 1.83 km long and altitude from 570 to 630 m. The eco-trail starts northwest of the town of Kalofer, near the Men's Monastery. The trail takes about an hour, an hour and a half. The beginning of the eco-trail is about 280 m from the outer border of the park, near the bivouac of the same name. The route crosses the White River on several bridges, forming a kind of figure eight.

The route follows the gorge of the river, passing through the White River bivouac. For curious tourists, information boards are set up, telling curious facts about the typical flora and fauna of the park.
The natural wealth of the Central Balkans impresses with its forests, water basins, animal and plant species. Eleven unique plant species can be seen here. The Central Balkan National Park also has a huge variety of animal species.

Pchelina Dam

Dam Pchelina is located about 20 kilometers from Radomir. If you are coming on the Struma highway, you have to take the exit to Trun. It passes through Pernik and stops to the village of Potsernentsi. You can leave your car at the beginning of the dirt road or drive on it. The road is broken in places, but with more attention and slow speed you can get closer to the hill. From the hill, where the chapel of St. John the Summer is located, a vast panoramic view of the entire dam and the surrounding area was revealed. I recommend visiting the place before sunset, the view is even more beautiful.

Pchelina Dam covers an area of 5.38 sq. Km. Until 1978, the village of Pchelintsi was located here. The name of the village is not accidental - the beekeeping craft was highly developed. After a decree was issued, however, the people were evicted to the surrounding villages and the village was submerged. Only the medieval church has survived on the hill above the dam. The place is extremely picturesque, so it is one of the favorite places of photographers.
