2. The Pliocene Museum in the village of Dorkovo
An extremely little-known museum in Bulgaria, which is, however, extremely interesting and unique. The paleontological site near the village Dorkovo, Rakitovo municipality, is Europe's largest locality of mastodons of the genus Anancus anvernensis from the late Pliocene period of 4-4.5 million years ago.
The paleontological site near Dorkovo is unique because:
- It is from the late Pliocene, and no mastodon deposits from this period have been found in Europe. There are deposits from the early Pliocene. In this sense, a research gap has been filled.
- The largest accumulation of bone material in one place was found here.
- It is located at the crossroads between Europe, Africa and Asia and provides information on the migration, evolution and relationships of animal species.
- Here in 1985-87 was held the first mixed paleontological expedition East - West, which broke the Iron Curtain during the Cold War in the 20th century.
