The Tsepina Fortress is one of the most remarkable medieval fortifications in the Rhodope Mountains. It is located on a high cone-shaped hill above the village of Dorkovo, from where a wide view of the Tsepina Valley opens. It was built in the 9th century and for a long time served as an important strategic and administrative center. During the period of the Second Bulgarian Empire, Tsepina reached its greatest prosperity, when it became the seat of sebastokrator Alexiy Slav. The impressive fortress walls, once reaching 12 meters in height, surrounded the citadel with a palace, residential buildings and several churches. Today, foundations and parts of the fortifications have been preserved, but the place continues to preserve the feeling of grandeur and history. The fortress is easily accessible to visitors and is among the popular cultural and historical sites in the region, combining natural beauty and the rich heritage of the Bulgarian Middle Ages.
