Depending on the composition of the group (age, physical fitness, cycling skills) and the set goals (resting in nature, passing near historical landmarks), we can choose cycling routes in our country that vary in length and difficulty. Our country is favored in this respect – there is something for everyone. On our native roads, we can get away with the most diverse types of bicycles - from expensive professional models and high-passable mountain runners to two-wheelers for a few hundred BGN, used to get to work or to take a short walk on the weekend. Double wheels or so-called "tandems" are not among the most common animals in this velo fauna.

For those unfamiliar - let's briefly explain what a tandem is. It is a bicycle with two tires, but also with two seats located (unlike rickshaws, for example) one behind the other. The front rider is responsible for steering, while the co-driver has support functions, mostly related to pedaling and in some cases braking or balancing. The first double wheels were patented in England in 1880. Models with two seats side by side were known as sociable or “Daisy Bells”. "Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two)" is the title of the 1892 popular song by British songwriter Harry Dacre.

In 1898 Mikael Pedersen was selling his double models for £24 and the quadruple for £64.
But the star of tandems rose to its full glory only after the Second World War, when the population began to shake off poverty and open up to a diverse type of leisure entertainment. Over the years, these non-standard bikes have undergone serious development. Both road and off-road modifications are developed serially.

For Bulgarians, tandem cycling is rather exotic. When we hear "Tandem", the first thing that most likely comes to mind is a popular brand of meat products, rather than any type of vehicle. Part of the reasons for this are the lack of traditions, the relatively high price, the large size, making tandems inconvenient to move and store in urban conditions.

The very term "tandem" means and symbolizes connectedness, coordination, synchronized movement towards a common goal. That is why such bikes are an extremely good choice for romantic picnics and outings in nature. The more experienced cyclist sets the pace and direction. The partner at the back contributes pedaling, keeping in mind the team discipline. What better embodiment of the perfect family - each taking responsibility in the area in which they are strong, while the other supports them morally and physically?! It is quite natural that one partner is at the head of the tandem at one moment, and the other at the next. Full dedication to the common goal (without tricks and tricks) guarantees a long and exciting journey, regardless of the weather and other obstacles.

Tandem cycling

is a good option for strengthening the relationship between children and parents. The little ones riding in the back have the privilege and comfort of resting every now and then and bombarding the panting parent in front of them with various questions. Despite the many contradictions of our 21st century (wars, inequality, search for meaning), human development has also reached a level of humanity, solidarity and finding ways to alleviate the situation of those in need. Limitations in carrying out full physical activity and social contacts are serious challenges for blind people. Sport plays a positive role in overcoming and partially compensating them.

Sweeping kilometer after kilometer, the pair of athletes (sighted and blind) have the opportunity to communicate freely with each other. The distance between them is no different than that of a cafe table. Not that anything prevents them from sipping from a bottle of refreshing liquid here as well. The difference is in the slightly more uncomfortable position, but the indisputable plus is the far more invigorating atmosphere. When organizing transitions involving larger groups of blind people, it is mandatory to observe certain security measures - leading and following cars, presence of reflective vests, optimal supply of tools and medical materials.

If you have experience and feel that the bike is an extension of your body and want to share your passion by cycling side by side with a blind person, you can contact an organization or sports club working with the visually impaired in your city. This is the most accurate place where you will learn how to approach communicating with visually impaired people. You will also be provided with the necessary assistance in getting the word out to the community and any other specific help to make the experience truly inspiring.

Conclusion

"Tandem" bikes are not particularly popular in Bulgaria and usually arouse curiosity among other road users. Buying this type of vehicle sounds like a good idea when planning a romantic picnic with your loved one or a family outing. As long as you have somewhere to store those long ones – otherwise renting is preferable.

Tandem cycling is an invaluable opportunity for people with impaired vision to experience the pleasure of practicing this wonderful sport, to have a pleasant leisure time and to keep their bodies in perfect condition. This is the goal that unites the efforts of their relatives, of experienced volunteer cyclists and of non-governmental organizations that have directed their efforts to overcoming obstacles for people with disabilities.
