  • The Rose Valley, located between the mountains Stara Planina and Sredna Gora, produces approximately half of the world's rose oil. Rose oil is derived from a species called Rosa Damascena. It is a major component in the cosmetics industry. Bulgarian rose oil is protected by a geographical indication. The season of rose picking and celebrations in the area in early June each year end with the coronation of the Pink Queen.

  • Plovdiv, the second largest city in Bulgaria, is the oldest permanently inhabited city in Europe. For most of its 8,000-year history, it has been known as Philippopolis. The capital Sofia is the second oldest with an approximate age of about 7000 years. By comparison, Rome is approximately 2,800 years old, and Athens was created 6,000 years ago.

  • In Varna the oldest gold treasure in the world has been discovered. In 1972, almost 300 graves were found in a necropolis in the industrial zone of the Bulgarian Black Sea capital. The artifacts date from 4600 - 4200 BC! The treasure consists of a total of 3,000 items and weighs six kilograms. Currently, you can admire this unique treasure composed of objects made of gold, copper and ceramics in the National History Museum in Sofia and in the Varna Archaeological Museum.

  • Bulgaria is one of the largest wine producers in the world. Wine production has a long history in the Bulgarian lands, dating back to the Thracians. No wonder then that fans of quality wine like Sir Winston Churchill, for example, adore a wide Melnik vine! He is said to have ordered 300 liters of the unique nectar each year for decades. In the 1980s, Bulgaria was the second largest wine exporter in the world. Cheers!

  • The Bulgarian Orthodox Church is the oldest Slavic Orthodox Church. It was recognized as an independent church in 870 AD, just a few years after it became the country's official religion. The cathedral Alexander Nevsky in the heart of the Bulgarian capital is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world.
