Pamporovo

The resort Pamporovo is located 15 kilometers north of the city of Smolyan and its altitude is over 1600 meters. It is extremely popular not only among Bulgarians, but also in a huge part of the countries in South-Eastern Europe. In winter it gives you the opportunity to enjoy some winter sports and we can guarantee that all the hotels in the area are simply amazing. All of them offer extremely beautiful views and unique Spa centers. If you're after a night out, you won't be disappointed - the resorts have plenty of traditional restaurants as well as some really good bars where you can enjoy a beer or two with friends and family. In the summer, the resort is still open to tourists and no less interesting – the beauty of The Rhodopes is breathtaking. There are dozens of eco trails where you can walk and have a peaceful picnic with your loved ones.

The Church of Saint Vissarion

Considered the fourth largest church in Bulgaria, the massive Eastern Orthodox temple was officially opened in 2006. The Church of Saint Vissarion is 32 meters high and has 11 bells, the largest of which is over 150 cm tall. If you are fascinated by architecture, we can guarantee that this the temple will leave you speechless. The destination is most popular among religious Bulgarians, but it is definitely worth a visit, even if you are not an Orthodox Christian.

Planetarium in Smolyan 

Founded in 1975, Smolyan's planetarium is the largest in the country and includes an astronomical observatory. Dozens of different programs are held in the "star room". The good thing is that these programs are translated into almost all possible languages, so every tourist can enjoy them. This place is extremely popular for family outings because kids are absolutely fascinated by all the space attractions visual effects, but there are some exciting things for adults too.

The regional historical museum of Smolyan

This is the biggest one museum in the central Rhodopes and it houses thousands of artefacts and ancient finds. It was built in 1935 and is located on a hill with a spectacular view of the city and the surrounding mountains. This is a must-see in the city of Smolyan and will surely take you back a few hundred years in time.

The art gallery in Smolyan  

Opened in the 1960s, the Smolyan Art Gallery houses more than 2,000 works of art. In this gallery in the small town of Smolyan, you will be able to find the original works of art of some of the most famous Bulgarian artists, who were inspired by the fascinating Bulgarian nature, traditions and practices or simply by the everyday life of the Bulgarian people in the 19th century. If you admire art, you will surely love this place - you will need a whole day to see the amazing works of art.

  1. Hello, you can also add to your list the "Hadzhichonevata Kashta" museum, which is also located in the city of Smolyan, Ustovo district, restored and managed by the "Rhodope Outlaws" Association!
    And as for destination #5, it is far from Smolyan.
