Freedom Monument (Shipka)

A few kilometers south of Gabrovo, at an altitude of 1,329 meters above sea level, on top of Mount Shipka, proudly stands the Shipka monument. This is a monument built in memory of those who died for the liberation of Bulgaria during the war between Russia and Turkey. It is one of the most symbolic places for Bulgarian people from a historical point of view, but it is equally attractive for tourists. The monument was opened in 1934 with a huge ceremony and from an architectural point of view it is simply amazing. To reach the monument, you will have to face almost a thousand steps, but once you catch a glimpse of the massive monument, it will all be worth it. It is a 32-meter tower built of stones, with a massive bronze lion above the monument gate. Inside the monument, you will be able to see some of the weapons that were used during the war, as well as the clothes that the Bulgarians wore during the battles. After stepping on the last step in the monument, a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains will amaze you and allow you to see the beauty of the Bulgarian nature. Words cannot describe the beauty of the view – you will have to see it with your own two eyes. It is a must-visit destination as it combines history, architecture and nature; we can guarantee that this place will make your love for Bulgaria grow dramatically and simply take your breath away.
