The Regional History Museum in Silistra preserves the history of the city and the region from ancient times to the present day. It exhibits unique monuments of Roman and medieval Bulgarian culture, which have both national and world significance. It has an archaeological and ethnographic exposition.

The museum building was built between 1923 and 1924 as a branch of the Romanian National Bank in the city, which was occupied by Romania at the time. Since 1990, it has housed the Archaeological Exhibition of the History Museum.

  • The prehistoric collection contains unique exhibits, such as the hoard of copper axes and carpenters from the 5th millennium BC, the hoard of bronze sickles and axes from the 2nd millennium BC.
  • The Thracian period includes monuments found in the city and nearby settlements such as a Thracian helmet, amphorae of Heraclea, vessels and objects from the necropolis near the village of Ishirkovo. The Roman era is represented by remarkable monuments that relate to the daily life of the military and civilian population of Durostorum. Impressive are the Roman funerary mask-helmet with depicted griffins, the ceremonial cavalry helmet, the chariot with its rich plastic decoration, the swords with precious stones and gold ornaments. The exhibition is complemented by statues of Roman emperors, citizens of Durostorum and gods.
