Built in two years, it was opened in 1867. The master hardly thought that ten years later the Russian liberation troops would cross this bridge. They did not know what its strength was, whether it would withstand the heavy cannons and a thousand people with horses. Master Kolyo Ficheto was called, and he, in order to assure the Russian general that his work was very solid and solidly done, went down himself and stood under the bridge until the heavy Russian cannons passed. The general embraced him and blessed him for the golden hands and the great skill that put a bridge in the beauty. Since then, the custom has remained for the master builder to stand under the bridge while the trial of the construction lasts. If the bridge does not last, let the craftsman be the first to perish with his shoddy work. This is the only construction site of which the craftsman made a model. Simultaneously with the bridge in Byala Kolyu, Ficheto also built the church "St. Trinity" in the town of Svishtov.
